S&P GSCI Cocoa Index Leaps 206% in a Year

The cocoa market has been tumultuous, marked by weaker crop yields across West Africa’s cocoa belt. Political unrest and insufficient investment in cocoa plantations have worsened the supply-demand imbalance, exacerbating global conditions. Furthermore, these challenges have propelled cocoa futures to staggering heights, with the S&P GSCI Cocoa index soaring 206% over the past 12 months and an astounding year-to-date increase of over 90%.

Supply Shortfall Hits 374K Tons: Prices Soar

This surge in cocoa prices has not come without consequences. Chocolate processors in the top-producing countries, including Ivory Coast and Ghana, have either halted or drastically reduced production in the face of soaring bean costs. The global market is feeling the pinch, with a supply shortfall of 374,000 tons this season and a predicted 10.9% drop in cocoa production. Also, chocolate giants like Hershey and Cadbury have sounded alarms over potential price hikes, citing the acute cocoa supply shortage.
