The Biggest Crypto-Crime Ever to be Filmed on Netflix

Netflix has taken notice of the largest crypto-related money laundering case in history(NASDAQ: NFLX). The corporation commissioned a documentary series about the 2016 Bitfinex crypto exchange attack. The attack resulted in the theft of 120,000 Bitcoins. The news came only days after the married hacking pair, dubbed “cyber Bonnie and Clyde,” were apprehended.

In 2016, Ilya Lichtenstein (34) and his wife, Heather Morgan, may have stolen 119,754 bitcoins from Bitfinex, a cryptocurrency exchange. At the time, the sum was roughly $71 million; it is now worth almost $5 billion at the current BTC price. The hacker infiltrated Bitfinex’s servers and launched over 2,000 unlawful transactions. The crypto “Bonnie and Clyde” became detained on February 8 for suspected conspiracy to launder billions in stolen cryptos.

Approximately 25K stolen Bitcoins went through intricate money laundering methods over the last five years. In fact, some of them ended up in Morgan and Lichtenstein’s banks.

The hackers cashed out millions of dollars to buy gold, NFTs, or even Walmart (NYSE: WMT) gift cards using Bitcoin ATMs. Moreover, the remaining 94K stolen Bitcoins were in a digital wallet that special agents could seize. At the seizure, the seized crypto was worth more than $3.6 billion. According to the Department of Justice report, the “cyber-Bonnie and Clyde” were conspiring to launder money and defraud the United States. Both counts may result in a maximum jail term of 25 years.

Meanwhile, Netflix will rebuild the case and investigation the world’s largest financial criminal case. According to the release, director Chris Smith, the creator of “FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened” and docuseries phenomenon “Tiger King,” will helm the new documentary series. Moreover, Nick Bilton, the executive producer of “Fake Famous” and “American Kingpin: The Epic Hunt for the Criminal Mastermind Behind the Silk Road,” is a collaborator on the upcoming Netflix documentary series.
