Companies are trying to adapt to the new reality, as the coronavirus pandemic changed the world. Amazon also plans to pay more attention to its employees and their problems. For example, it is giving employees more flexibility to work from home even after its offices begin to reopen next year.
According to the company’s CEO Andy Jassy, Amazon will leave it up to individual team directors to decide how often their employees work in the office. The company declined to say how many people it employs at the director level.
The company expects that there will be teams that will continue working remotely. Some employees will spend several days in the office and several days at home.
Amazon’s decision marks a shift from its earlier return-to-office plans, which said it expected most corporate employees to return to the office beginning on January 3, 2022.
However, the tech giant decided to change its position. The company found that it could not prescribe a “one-size-fits-all approach” to work at its scale. Currently, Amazon has 1.3 million employees, with hundreds of thousands of those in corporate roles.
Also, employees can work several weeks per year fully remotely from any location within the country they are employed. However, most employees will be expected to remain close enough to their team.
Microsoft also embraced remote work. In September, the company indefinitely postponed its return to the office. Google, as well as Facebook, are also ready to adapt to the new reality. People who work for Twitter can work from home “forever” if they choose to. Major tech companies are willing to work with employees to accommodate their needs. Companies around the world should try to work with their workers to find the best solution.
